Greed
"Solitary as an oyster" - Money has caused him to be lonely, simile highlights this. "For he boasted no great coat" - Highlights Bob's poverty, contrasted to Scrooge's greed. "Covetous old sinner" - Bible allusion, money draws him away from god and benevolence. "Are there no workhouses" - No care for the poor, shows his value for money over humanity. "A poor excuse for picking a man's pockets" - No value in Christmas, only sees it as a waste of money. "I wear the chain I forged in life" - Bound forever by his own greed now. "It's as if his kindness cost a fortune" - Begins to see the value in compassion, disregards monetary value.
