TermDefinition
Sill plate
Aboard attached to the top of the foundation wall, typically with anchor bolts, either 2x4 or 2x6
Header/rim joist
Nailed to the top of the sill plate at the exterior edge
Joist
Horizontal beams that support the floor
where do end of joist rest
end of the joist rests on the sill plate and is nailed to the header
How faar do joist span
They span from the sill plate to an interior wall or beam and are normally spaced 12" to 16"
Lumber sizes for joist framing
Lumber sizes for joists are 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12
Subfloor
covers the joist and is typically plywood
what fastens subfloor
The subfloor is fastened to the joists with nails or screws, and construction adhesives are often used to strengthen the floor system.
Double header
Used at an opening that disrupts the framing pattern
How is double header installed
double header is installed perpendicular to the joist; the same size member that is used for the joist is used for the header
double trimmer
Two joists nailed together next to an opening
Tail joist
Normally runs between the double header and sill plate
Ledger
Small piece of lumber nailed to the side of a double header at the bottom of the edge. This piece serves as a ledge on which each tail joist rests
Bridging
Small member between joists to provide lateral support and help transmit the load between the joists
Cantilevered floors
The floor joists are extended out beyond the support, and the joists carry the loads back to the sill plate and foundation
Floor framing dimensions
Shown on the floor framing plan, typically member sizes are designated as 2x10 or 2x12, and member spacing as on center 12" OC or 16" OC
Wall dimensioning
Check to verify the dimensioning practice
Exterior walls dimensions
dimensions normally given to outside edge of studs
Interiror wall dimensions
normally given to the edges of the studs
Diemnsioning notes
The dimensioning protocol to be used is usually shown in the general notes. Always read the general notes before reading drawings
Floor joist member materials
Solid wood joists in 2x sises most common
where does wood joist span
From the outside wall to the interior support walls or beams
Most common floor joist walls sizes
Common sizes are 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12 amd 2x6 is used for short spans
