The Integumentary System
Also known as the cutaneous membrane, is made up of our skin and close structures. It is the body's largest organ.
Epithelial Tissue
Found on the surfaces as either covering (outer) or linings (inner). It receives oxygen and nutrients from the blood supply of the connective tissue beneath them and is capable of secretion.
What can influence skin color?
Amount, color, and distribution of pigments in our skin. This is determined by heredity along with age, health, where a person lives, activity, and the number of superficial vessels that allow blood to be very close to the skin.
Epidermis
The outer, external layer of skin that is on top of a layer of connective tissue. Hair and nails, and melanin cells also are related to this.
Dermis
The inner, internal primary layer of skin composed mostly of connective tissue. It contains small blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves of the skin.
Sebaceous (Oil)
Glands secrete sebum and serve to keep the hair and skin soft and pliable.
Sudoriferous (Sweat)
Secretes sudor and is found on most body surfaces. Opens onto the surface of the skin through tiny openings called pores.
Ceruminous (Wax)
Helps to protect the ear canal by trapping bacteria and foreign particles.
Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer)
Primarily composed of fat and connective tissue that acts as an insulating layer. This is the bottom layer.
