TermDefinition
Primary Function of Engine Company
Stretch and Operate hose lines
Why is the Initial hose line crucial?
Majority of structure fires are controlled and extinguished by the initial line
Primary purposes of initial hose line:
- Allow occupants to evacuate - Allow firefighters to search above the fire - Confine and extinguish fire
Who decides engine placement
Company Officer
Recommended Hydrant to Engine distance
100 feet
Extended Attack Lines
- 200 feet of 2 and 1/2 inch (blitz line) - 200 feet of inch and 3/4 (apartment bundle)
AVP
- Air - Volume - Pattern
AVP Purpose
- Bleed air from charged hoseline - Assess fire stream when flowing - Check fire stream for appropriate pattern
Evolution Decision factors:
- Location of Fire - Severity of Fire - Type of Construction
Team integrity in IDLH via:
- Physical Contact - Audible Comms - Visual Contact
Where is the #3 Firefighter and what is their job?
Behind the Driver (left side), Nozzle Person
Where is the #4 Firefighter and what is their job?
Behind the Officer (Right side), Tool person
Company Driver Engineer Responsibilities
- Safely Deliver personnel - Provide Continuous supply of water
Monitor Manifold Evolution Roles:
- Officer directs driver, designates evolution, kneels at tri-gate, sends engine for water, and directs the manifold while flowing - Driver signals crew to exit via honk, sets parking brake and wheel blocks, and removes both sections of inch and 3/4 apartment bundle - Position #3 Firefighter: POSITION HOSELINES FOR MANIFOLD 1. procure monitor and base and hand to officer, assist #4 in removing 2 1/2 inch bulk bed or removing apartment bundle. 2. Break 200 feet of 2 and 1/2 inch into two sections and hand female couplings off to #4 at tri-gate. Stretch male couplings 50 feet beyond monitor. 3. Turn around and walk back, past the monitor about 20 feet. Turn again and connect each to the monitor, and spread the hoselines into position. 4. Secure anchor chain to the hoselines where they cross in front of the monitor. Tie a body loop around the lines where they cross behind the monitor. - Position #4 Firefighter: - Irons to the fire side, and remove 2½” hose from bulk bed. Break 2½” at 200 foot mark and remove the second section. - Assist officer with tri-gate. - Connect the 2½” female couplings to the tri-gate. - Select proper tip size as directed by officer - Open tri-gate valves at call for water.

Why is LDH preferred for hydrants?
LDH preferred because high flow with minimal friction loss
When is 2½” hose used for hydrants?
2½” used when LDH is impractical and additional company support is delayed.
