What's the function of epithelial tissue:

Acts as a protective barrier, secrets small molecules/mucus, and absorbs fluid and nutrients.

Epithelial tissue is found where?

Lining the lumen of organs and blood vessels and covering the outside surface of an organ and our body

What are the 3 types of Epithelial tissue?

1. Simple epithelium (single layer) 2. Stratified epithelium (multilayer) 3. Glandular epithelium (hollow specialized for secretion)

What are the two types of Stratified Epithelium and explain both:

1. stratified transitional epithelium - layers of cuboidal cells 2. stratified squamous epithelium - layers of squamous cells

What are the two classes of secretion in glandular epithelium?

1. Exocrine epithelial gland 2. Endocrine epithelial gland

What does the exocrine epithelial gland do? What does it look like?

secretes into lumen of an organ or structure. can resemble a branching tree or spiral tube (urinary gland)

What does the endocrine epithelial gland do? What does it look like?

secretes into the blood. resembles groups/clumps or strings of blood near blood vessels.

What is the role of Connective tissues?

to provide strength

What are connective tissues made of?

they are made of fibroblast cells or any other specialized cell types & organic material they produce

What types of connective tissues are produced by fibroblast cells?

1. Elastic 2. Collagenous (loose or dense) 3. Reticular

What types of connective tissue are produced by specialized cells?

1. cartilage (hyaline, fibrous, elastic) 2. adipose (fat) 3. bone 4. red blood cells and leukocytes

What are the 3 muscle tissues and what do they do?

1. skeletal muscle - controls movement of animal bone and limbs 2. cardiac muscle - controls movement of blood through the heart 3. smooth muscle - found in many places, controls movement of food through the digestive system, air in the lung airways

What can be found on a skeletal muscle?

Striations

What can be found on cardiac muscle?

striations and intercalated disks

What can be found on smooth muscle?

NOTHING! they don't have striations or intercalated disks

What do nervous tissue consist of?

neurons and glial cells that provide sensory information and tissue-tissue communication

What is a nerve?

bundles of neurons surrounded by connective tissue
