Oh, hello. Who’s this?

(There’s the slightest bit of romantic tension between them. We hear keys jingling from outside the door, and in walks Victoria, fiddling with her keys and shutting the door, not noticing Travis at first:) | I walked all the way there, and class was cancelled. Can you believe it?
(Looks up.)
Oh, hello. Who’s this? |
Hi, I’m Travis. | ...Hi. |
Do you know him? | I don’t think so. How do you know him? |
He’s my ex. You alright? | I don’t know. He looked familiar. |
Hookup? | No, no, I don’t mess with guys. |
Phew. | “Phew?”
(Jill shrugs.)
You flirt. |
You were the one monologuing about me while I slept. | Oh, God. You heard that? |
A little bit. | Hopefully nothing too embarrassing? |
Just that you like to be around me. It was sweet. Why, was there more? | That pretty much sums it up. Sorry. |
I didn’t mind. I thought it was flattering. Anyways, uh, Travis? | Oh yeah, well, he looked just like-- please don’t think I sound crazy. |
Okay. | He looked just like the wolf I saw last night. |
That’s impossible. | I know, I know. It’s just-- that was uncanny. |
Bizarre! What a weird coincidence! | You know, I’ve been thinking-- every body they found was all torn up. And I kept seeing that wolf around the time those nine girls disappeared. I wonder if someone’s been training it to cover
their tracks. What if-- |
That can’t be true. Wolves aren’t like dogs, you can’t just-- | No, listen to me. I was there. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. The girl in the woods, the marks on the girls who drowned. At the end of the day, their bodies got found; there was still some evidence. But what if those nine girls are still missing because he fed them to his
pet? And what about the girls mauled by a bear? I bet it wasn’t a bear at all, it was that wolf. |
So you can tell different wolves apart now? | Anyone could tell this one apart. It was huge, and its face... Look, I know this is a weird theory, Jill, but I really think I’m onto something. If we can track that wolf down, maybe we can track down if it has an owner, or-- |
No, stop. I know it wasn’t Travis. | ...What? I never said it was Travis, I said it was a wolf. Are you okay? Do you know something I don’t? |
Oh. No. It’s just, you compared that wolf to Travis. I don’t know, I thought you were implying he was some sort of, I don’t know-- | What, like a werewolf? |
Yeah.
(Victoria laughs. Jill doesn’t. Victoria stops.) | Oh, you’re serious. I forgot you think monsters are real. |
He didn’t do it, I know that for a fact. Just trust me. | Wait, do you seriously think Travis and that wolf are actually the same person? |
I-- no, I-- | (Teasing, yet sincere:) You totally do! I’m sorry Jill, I didn’t mean to freak you out about your ex. He’s not a werewolf, I promise. If he was, I’d make sure he never had the chance to eat you, or anything like that. |
Stop! Stop! Shut up! | I’m sorry, did I upset you? |
Yes, you did! You’re making me feel stupid. Werewolves don’t eat people. Just stop talking about it, please! | What is up with you right now? |
Nothing! | Something’s up. |
I’m fine. | Will you just tell me so I can help? |
You can’t help me. | Try me. |
Fine! I’m a werewolf, okay?
(Beat. Silence.)
What? Does that surprise you? | I can’t tell if you’re upset or joking. Am I allowed to laugh? |
I’m not joking. The muzzle, the pet brushes, the chains, everything. That’s all for me. I never had a dog, okay? I don’t even like dogs, I hate dogs! | Okay, I wanted to be friends with you, but now you’re playing, like, mind games with me. I’m confused, I thought you wanted this to happen. Do you not want this to happen? |
Whatever, I don’t care. You’ll see. Later, you’ll see. I’ve got to go to class. | Just tell me what you want! Tell me what’s going on! |
Fine!
(Jill pulls out her phone, opens a video, and shoves it in Victoria’s face.)
See this? Look.
(In the video, we hear her screaming and crying while trying to address the camera, it is
difficult to get through every word: “You’re not crazy, Jill! If tomorrow, when you wake
up, you don’t remember this, it was all real! You’re not imagining anything! Please figure
this out!” Victoria looks both heartbroken and utterly terrified.)
This was the second time it ever happened. | Oh my God. Jill, I’m-- |
Are you happy now? | I’m-- I-- you-- you’re-- |
I’m a total freak. | And that means Travis is-- |
A werewolf, yeah. | Which means he did it. |
What? | He was there that night. |
So you think, just because he’s a werewolf, it was all his fault? | He was there! |
A wolf was there, Victoria, it could have been any wolf! | He killed her, he killed all those girls! You knew I was right about the wolf this whole time! |
He didn’t do it, Victoria! | You knew! |
I knew about the first girl, okay! But it was a mistake! It wasn't his fault! He was just trying to protect us! | You... what? Protect “us”? |
Us, as in-- | As in-- as in what? As in you were there? Were you there? Are you a part of this? |
No, Victoria, please just let me--
(Jill reaches out towards her, and Victoria flinches and cowers.)
Are you scared of me? | I-- I-- |
You think we’re all the same, don’t you? | Stop, you know that’s not-- |
You think we're all bloodthirsty monsters. | Get away from me. |
You think, just because I’m a wolf, I’m gonna kill you?! | Stop! |
Wow. Okay. | Jill, I-- |
