Time-Slicing | A method of splitting app attention done by the OS to make the illusion of multitasking. Must context switch between cycles which saves the state, load the saved state of the next application, and then upload the scheduler |
What happens when an app starts? | User must click first, then the OS finds the app in storage, then it is copied from storage to memory, this app is then added to the OS scheduling system |
A packet has what components? | The IP address, the message (data being sent), and an attached sequence number to ensure it is received and viewed as intended |
Communication link | The instrumentality underlying the connection between a network and its devices; wired or wireless |
Device Driver | Software to control and I/O device (understands and works with the hardware's command language) |
Hypervisor | A software that controls and manages the OS's for virtualization |
Bare Metal Hypervisor | Runs directly on the system (no OS in between) to split resources, helpful when efficiency and productivity is most desired |
Hosted Hypervisor | Runs as an application within the context of the regular OS, still splits resources from here |
The power wall problem | You can only cool so many transistors because although their individual heat output is low, together they get very hot, limiting the potential of clock speeds |
Rows | Records |
Columns | Fields |
SQL Query | Select -> From -> Where |
The process of a query looks like | Find the record in the table in storage
Copy the record into memory
Apply the query to the copy in memory
If the record matches the query, copy the information from all applicable fields into a temporary file for storage |
What is one issue with populating multiple databases? | You can make an error when changing, or forget to change it in one of them. You can fix this by not populating identical data to multiple sets. Keep one set and update and reference from there |
String search | Selecting for a specific pattern of letters |
Web Crawler | The mechanism that sorts through and analyzes new information on the web in order for the search engine to precompute and find best results to display when you search |
Lossy Compression | Condenses patterns into a repetition of one discrete data and cuts down on information that is not perceivable by humans which analog would pick up. |
Lossless compression | Condenses data using common patterns based on the repetition of a discrete data point |
Nyquist Theorem | The sampling rate should be at least double the frequency in Hz/sec |
Each pixel in a black and white image is given a value based on what, and what is it called? | It is given a value of grey between 0 and 255 and this is labeled as its luminance |
To play a video the computer must? | Read the next image and convert the numbers to pixels for the hardware then pass the result on |
I-Frame | An independent and complete frame, also designated as a key frame |
P-Frame | A predictive frame that is calculated based on the difference between the frames, also designated as a difference frame |
B-Frame | A bidirectional frame that compresses based on the difference between a future frame and the current one or a previous one |
Router | A networking device that forwards data packets between networks, from devices |
WAN | Wide Area Network that connects devices across a city, country, or continent (Fiber Optic) |
LAN | It is a network designed to connect devices with a building or other such area of operation (Ethernet & Wi-Fi) |
PAN | A network for the home or individual (Bluetooth) |
