| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
meaning of desiccate? | to remove all moisture from an item/ dry it out |
what is etchant? | an acidic agent used to prepare a tooth surface for the adherence of dental material |
what is Eugenol? | a colorless oily liquid made from clove oil that is additive for its soothing qualities |
what is a hybrid layer | thin layer created between dentin and the adhesive resin that seals the space between the tooth and restoration |
What is micromechanical | is when a material and structure lock onto one another through minute cuttings |
meaning of polymerize | the bonding process of two or more monomers to form a polymer |
types of stimulus for pulpal responses | - physical stimuli - thermal/electrical
- mechanical stimuli - handpiece, traumatic occlusion, grinding
- chemical stimuli - acid from dental materials/ saliva
- biologic stimuli - bacteria from saliva. or carious structure was not completely removed |
what are dental liners? | a thin layer of material that is placed at the deepest portion of the dental preparation, which provides pulpal protection |
what do dental liners protect? | they protect the irritations caused by physical, mechanical, chemical biologic elements
|
what is calcium hydroxide used for? | used as a liner to protect the pulp from chemical irritation |
what are glass ionomer liners used for? | to form a strong bond to dentin, sealing the restoration to reduce microleakage and help reduce postoperative sensitivity |
what is a dental base ? | an additional layer to protect the pulp |
3 different types of pulp protection a base provides | protective - protects the pulp from a large restoration
insulating - protects the tooth from thermal shock
sedative - soothes the pulp that has been damaged by decay or irritated by mechanical means |
4 types of base materials | zinc oxide - eugenol (ZOE)
zinc phosphate
polycarboxylate
glass ionomer |
what is a varnish? | a material placed within the entire preparation sealing tubules, reducing microleakage around a restoration, a barrier to protect the tooth |
what is a desensitizer ? | used to treat or prevent hypersensitivity that a patient is experiencing from a newly placed direct or indirect restoration |
what is the use of a dental etchant ? | critical for the enamel and dentin as it forms a better mechanical bond between the tooth and the permanent restorative material |
examples of enamel bonding | -sealants
-bonding of orthodontic brackets
-resin-bonded bridges
-resin-bonded veneers |
